About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

A FINE CHEROOT BRASS SIGNAL CANNON CANE WITH ROSEWOOD SHAFT
20th century

36 1/4" H x 5 1/2" W (handle)

A rosewood walking stick fitted with a working brass signal cannon handle, the cylindrical barrel with turned bands and a domed finial to one end, the opposite end flaring slightly at the muzzle. The top of the barrel with a small touch hole for inserting a fuse or wick. The handle unscrews to reveal a fitted brass ramrod and a small compartment within the upper shaft for storing powder and wadding. The solid rosewood shaft is capped with a brass ferrule incised with double rings above a steel sabot tip.

Signal cannon canes of this type were designed for producing a loud report, often used ceremonially, for starting yacht races, or for maritime signaling. While some examples were intended primarily as novelty or sporting accessories, functioning models such as this were capable of firing small powder charges when properly loaded and ignited.

Condition: Untested. Appears to be functional and complete. Retains original ramrod. Rosewood shaft with some scuffs. A fine quality piece.
