About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

POLYCHROMED BRONZE BUST OF "GALLIC WARRIOR" BY ALBERT FROGER
Signed "A Froger" along integral socle
Item # 911EAS18P

A fascinating piece with a gorgeous polychromed patina with a mixture of chemical patinas, stains and pigments to create a vibrant surface rich with ruby hue skin and oxidized bronze garment. The bust depicts a Gaul warrior prepared for battle with a helmet protecting his head with shell and rosette embellishments within flanking relief horns. He wears a cape over a chainmail breastplate. With calculating eyes totally devoid of fear fixed in the distance, he looks to a difficult future with determination and a head held high.

While relatively little is known about the life of Alfred Froger, the Parisian sculptor is recorded as making his debut at Salon in 1881 where he received an honourable mention in 1889. The work is signed along the edge of the socle "A Froger".

Finely cast, expertly chased and chiseled and retaining a glowing and complex patina, the bust makes a powerful statement piece.
