About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

EBONIZED CAMPAIGN-STYLE DESK
Probably English, late 19th century, with later alterations

30 1/4" H x 28 5/8" D x 54" W
24" knee clearance

A most attractive campaign-style desk of rectilinear form fitted with a gilt-tooled burgundy leather writing surface inset within a brass surround. The desk is organized with a central frieze drawer flanked by thin drawers in the upper over banks of drawers in each pedestal, all retaining their original drawer boxes with visible hand-cut dovetails. Brass inset pulls and applied brass trim frame out the facade in distinct contrasting colors, the whole desk being raised on small caster wheels..

The desk has undergone sensitive alterations during the first half of the 20th century that make the form more attractive for modern interiors, especially the Deco-style and Hollywood Regency interiors that were such a rage through the third quarter of the 20th century. The contrasting trims and inset pulls were introduced to the desk in a way that refreshes the 19th century carcass, while the upper two smaller drawers had hinged panels added and the entire desk was ebonized. The effort was clearly undertaken with a great deal of seriousness and the result is both gorgeous and highly relevant for the modern interior.

We love the gilt-tooled leather writing surface, which shows age appropriate wear and patination, with its tooling and rich color lending contrast to the darkened case and brass fittings. The overall impression is one of practical solidity, with a restrained decorative aesthetic derived from military and travel furniture rather than domestic ornament.

Condition:
Later ebonized surface and altered upper drawers; replaced brasses and added trim fittings; leather is probably original but perhaps was changed. Wear to leather and brass consistent with age and use. Various veneer losses, these mostly in-painted and now part of the overall patina. Ready to place.
