ENGLISH ARTS & CRAFTS CERUSED AND POLYCHROMED OAK TABLETOP MIRROR
Circa the first quarter of the 20th century
Item # 403QEK18P
This distinguished early 20th century table-top mirror is a delightful object from the Arts & Crafts era, notable for its transparent construction and functional form. The mirror is crafted of oak which has been treated with a ceruse finish, a technique that highlights the natural grain of the wood through a whitewash filling the open pores. The polychrome accents are largely contained to the columns and add a subdued yet rich palette of color, a reflection of the preference for natural motifs and artisanal craftsmanship during the period.
The upper part of the frame features subtle, carved decorative elements which evoke organic shapes of flowers and leaves in bas-relief, typical of the Arts & Crafts movement's aesthetic, steering away from industrial repetition and celebrating the hand-made and distinct.
The twin columns flanking the mirror feature turned finials over a chaotic and angular fluting that moves geometrically around each column; they bring rich texture while not distracting from the sturdy and utilitarian character.
This mirror embodies the Arts & Crafts movement’s principles of good design and craftsmanship, the result being both practical and incredibly pleasing aesthetically. Its understated beauty and the warmth of the oak would complement an interior where the integrity of material and design are cherished.
