About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

WRITING STAND IN ROGNON (KIDNEY) FORM
French, late 19th century

34 7/8” W x 18 1/2” D (at feet) x 29 3/8” H

A refined late 19th-century French writing stand, designed in a graceful rognon (kidney) form that allows a writer to sit closely and work with ease. The top displays an intricate marquetry bouquet arranged within a circular reserve, surrounded by a field of geometric parquetry and enclosed within an endless loop border. A brass band follows the undulating outline of the top, emphasizing its sculptural shape.

Veneered throughout in golden kingwood, the table features a single drawer, fitted with hand-cut dovetail joinery, opening to reveal compartments intended for inkwells and a pen. The base is light and architectural, formed by pierced and scrolled supports that meet a shaped stretcher and terminate in small brass casters.

Condition: Minor veneer chips and scuffs, light edge wear. Discolorations to the kingwood veneers here and there. Sturdy and stable, ready for regular functional use in the home.
