About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

LOUIS XV STYLE GREEN-PAINTED CHINOISERIE MARBLE TOP COMMODE
Probably French, late 19th to early 20th century

34 3/8" H x 17" D x 34 5/8" W

Executed in the Louis XV taste, this finely decorated two-drawer commode features a gently serpentine front with two full-width drawers framed by gilt-bronze mounts and a richly veined marble top. The surface is painted in deep green lacquer and embellished throughout with gilt chinoiserie scenes depicting figures within stylized landscapes, the sides ornamented with floral urns in complementary tones of gold and ochre. The drawers are hand-dovetailed and constructed with oak secondary wood, retaining one original key.

The gilt-bronze mounts are crisply cast, including foliate sabots, scroll corner mounts, and a central wreath with ribbon cresting and pendant ornament. The quality of the painted decoration and giltwork aligns with Parisian workshop production of the late 19th century, when cabinetmakers sought to reinterpret 18th-century forms with vibrant lacquer finishes and exotic motifs inspired by the chinoiserie revival.

Condition:
Very good overall condition with scattered craquelure and losses to the paint, inpainting throughout; discolored shellac throughout; minor surface wear, and light rubbing to ormolu. Marble top with faint scratches and natural inclusions consistent with age. Drawers move in and out without difficulty. Includes original key. Ready to place.
