About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

FREDERICK GEORGE RICHARD ROTH
United States, 1872-1944

Hissing Cat (1913)

Lost-wax cast bronze | Signed in cast "Copyright 1913 by FGR ROTH / Gorham Co Founder ORP"

Item # 208NKJ18H

An exquisite lost-wax casting of Hissing Cat by Frederick G.R. Roth executed by the Gorham Foundry, it is a fine example with a nuanced overall dark-brown surface patina with auburn relief throughout the texture of the surface. The cat is beautifully captured with an arched back and tension in her body that is fully expressed in her withdrawn ears and sharp hiss. An example that highlights Roth's ability to capture the sensitive details of his subjects and highlight their personality with a carefully selected moment - here the coy irritation of this household cat is well-represented without any sense of aggression or tension in the image as she pulls in her head and looks up at her likely human offender.

The model is signed along the base and is cold-stamped with the foundry markings. The underside is filled with plaster and covered in an early green baize.

Measurements: 5 1/2" H x 3 3/4" D x 5 3/4" W

Condition Report:
Excellent original condition, no observed flaws; carefully cleaned and sealed in conservator-grade wax. Early green baize to underside with various labels attached.
