Ludovisi Mars, After the Antique
Patinated bronze | raised on an original marble plinth
13 1/2" H x 6 3/8" D x 4 3/4" W (total including base)
10 3/8" H x 6 1/2" D x 4" W (bronze)
A model of the Ludovisi Mars (or Ludovisi Ares) cast after the statue of Roman antiquity, it depicts the seated god of war with god Eros resting at his feet. Mars rests on a rocky outcropping with his shield staged beside him, his foot propped on his resting helmet and sword grasped loosely in his hand. The original from the Ludovisi collection is executed in marble and is held in the collection of the National Museum of Rome in the Palazzo Massimo alle Terme. That monumental example dates from the 4th century B.C. and is believed to have had Eros added during restoration by Bernini. Many smaller reductions were cast for wealthy art collectors as they traveled on their Grand Tour of Italy. An example of one of these reductions is held in the permanent collection of the Frick, cast by Luigi Valadier (1726–1785). Another example of a slightly larger same dimension as our model was offered at Sotheby's, London, 2 February 2021, lot 95 [12 1/2" H] where it achieved 6,048 GBP (approximately $ 8200 USD at a conversion rate on the date of sale of 1.37). A nearly identical example to the present model raised on the same rouge marble and Belgian black marble plinth was sold at Sotheby's together with three other small Grand Tour models on 14 April 2011 in London (sale L11309, lot 278) where the lot achieved a total of 10,000 GBP (or approximately $ 16376 USD at the prevailing conversion rate at the time of 1.6376).
The present model exhibits a fabulous texture throughout, mostly captured directly from the underlying molds together with chiseling and filing bringing definition in the nails, wings, hair and all other detailed elements. It is finished in a dark chemical patination, this having oxidized and discolored over time to create the wonderful nuanced surface.
Condition Report:
Extensive wear and discoloration to the original patina. Rubbing to elements. Cleaned and sealed in conservator's grade wax, a fine presentation. Raised on the original marble plinth with early discolored green baize - threaded posts on the underside of the base may be added or replaced.
