PAIR OF GUSTAVIAN STYLE CHESTS OF DRAWERS
Probably Northern or Eastern Europe ca. 20th/21st century
35 3/8" H x 18 1/2" D x 35 1/8" W
A matched pair of Gustavian style commodes, each with a faux porphyry painted wood top over a narrow upper drawer framed by a carved Greek key frieze. The lower section with two full-width drawers, their fronts carved in horizontal fluting and fitted with cast brass ring pulls and circular keyhole escutcheons. The case corners with vertical fluting terminating in carved roundels in the capital as well as just above the tapered and fluted legs.
Constructed with all hand-cut dovetailed drawers and employing traditional joinery throughout, the chests exhibit period-accurate construction details and were designed to last for generations. The faux porphyry tops are painted in dark mottled red, white, and black, imitating the appearance of stone.
An incredibly easy pair to place with great texture, fabulous surface patina in the distressed gray-white paint and ideal proportions. Highly relevant in a very wide range of interiors and just gorgeous.
Condition: Faux and natural distress throughout. Drawers are a bit snug (can be relieved a bit upon request). Some scuffing to the painted tops. Includes two keys. Ready to place.
