About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

PAIR OF JAPANESE PATINATED BRONZE VASIFORM LAMPS
Japan, early 20th century

23 1/2" H x 5 9/16" W x 5 9/16" D

ref. 512BDQ06P

A matched pair of Japanese bronze urns later converted to table lamps, each of baluster form with flared neck and spreading shoulder. The surfaces are worked in bas-relief with dense geometric key pattern grounds framing applied ornament.

Each body is cast with oval reserves enclosing dragons in pursuit of the flaming pearl, surrounded by scrolling cloud forms. The shoulders are mounted with sculptural dragon handles, their scaled bodies coiling downward in high relief and terminating near the midsection. The lower bodies rest on three shaped supports modeled with stylized mask and feather motifs.

The bronze retains a deep, dark brown patina with lighter highlights on projecting elements, consistent with age and handling. The urns are raised on modern plinth bases constructed of aged brass sheeting over a wooden substrate. The electrical fittings are later adaptations.

A very striking and highly decorative pair.

Condition: Patinated bronze surfaces with minor wear consistent with age. Bending to the tops. Later wiring and lamp hardware - a professional electrician should inspect before use. Mounted on modern bases.
