A FINE PAIR OF LOUIS XVI ORMOLU CANDLESTICKS
France, circa 1770; ex. The Wildenstein Collection
Item # C104027
An incredibly fine pair of ormolu bronze candlesticks from the Wildenstein Collection, they feature a fluted baluster stem draped with fruiting garlands around the swell which is edged by a band of repeating waterleaves under the acanthus decorated nozzles. These have separately cast drip-pans with beaded edges. The cove-molded circular base is decorated with draped acanthus foliage and bands of beads. Notable is the quality of the casting, chiseling and chasing, all of which is nearly of jeweler-grade with an original warm gilding over the bronze.
