A FINE PAIR OF LOUIS XVI ORMOLU CANDLESTICKS
France, circa 1770; ex. The Wildenstein Collection
Item # C104027

An incredibly fine pair of ormolu bronze candlesticks from the Wildenstein Collection, they feature a fluted baluster stem draped with fruiting garlands around the swell which is edged by a band of repeating waterleaves under the acanthus decorated nozzles. These have separately cast drip-pans with beaded edges. The cove-molded circular base is decorated with draped acanthus foliage and bands of beads. Notable is the quality of the casting, chiseling and chasing, all of which is nearly of jeweler-grade with an original warm gilding over the bronze.

Provenance:

  • The Wildenstein Collection, Paris
  • Christies, London, Sale 7171, 14-15 December 2005, lot 311, achieved 4200 GBP ($ 7426 USD total acquisition price)
  • Acquired directly from the above; held in a private Virginia collection to the present

Measurements: 11 1/2" H x 5 1/2" diameter

Condition Report:
One base slightly out of the round. Gilding loss throughout, more pronounced around the tapered baluster where they would most frequently be handled. Very fine original condition.
