A FINE REGENCY PERIOD MAHOGANY SARCOPHAGUS-FORM TEA CADDY
England, circa early 19th century | with cut-crystal mixing bowl
Item # 209TGW28K
A very fine Regency period mahogany tea caddy of sarcophagus form, it features a wonderful early surface that is rich with patina: oxidized old finish in crevices and edges, the ruby hues of the mahogany coming through where it has been handled most, the nearly blackened scuffs and scrapes all preserved under the glowing layers of shellac and wax. It is a brilliant piece of craftsmanship, the box expertly conceived and executed with a sweet cove profile under the complex various layers of molding that make up the coffin lid. The lid opens to reveal two lidded compartments, each of which is its own self-contained mahogany box with crisp hand-cut dovetails that openly line the corners. These flank the central cut-crystal mixing bowl. The whole form rests over turned feet affixed with hand-cut screws from the underside. A marvelous presentation of very high grade.
Measurements: 8 7/8" H x 9" D x 16 1/2" W
Condition Report:
An exquisite early patinated surface, some original finish present under the polished shellac and layers of wax; with what appears to be the original crystal mixing bowl and associated wear to the lid at points where the crystal rubs; retains early key.
