About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

BRONZE AND BLACK MARBLE TWO TIER GUÉRIDON TABLE
Probably France, circa late 19th century

27 7/8" H x 21 1/8" D x 21 1/8" W

This two tier guéridon is constructed of finely cast bronze and fitted with black marble tops, the circular upper and lower shelves each encircled by a pierced and chased gallery. The structure is supported by three twisted bronze standards, each emerging from a sculptural rooster head beneath the upper tier. The modeling of the heads is sharp and expressive, with well defined combs, beaks, and feathered textures that transition into the spiral shafts.

The legs terminate in cast rooster feet, crisply articulated and resting on original casters, joined at the base by a triangular stretcher that reinforces the structure while maintaining an open, balanced profile. The use of the rooster motif, a symbol closely associated with France, reflects a taste for naturalistic and emblematic forms that was especially prevalent in decorative bronzes of the second half of the 19th century.

The combination of animated animal ornament, polished bronze surfaces and dark marble lends the table both visual richness and practical versatility, suitable for use as a side table, lamp stand, or occasional table.

Condition:
Entirely disassembled, re-polished, iron tri-form braces under table top re-ebonized - in very fine original condition. Good overall condition with minor surface wear consistent with age and use. The marble tops show light surface marks. Casters appear original and are functional. The legs are ever-so-slightly out of triangulation when viewed from certain angles. Ready to place.
