About us

silla was born out of a passion for beautiful objects: special pieces with aesthetic and historical significance. In 2009, after years of collecting, Andrew Silla and his wife Grace began to work privately with clients from their residence in Southern Maryland. Quickly outgrowing the space, the business was moved from Maryland to Pennsylvania in 2012 and after several warehouse location changes it was firmly settled in the present brick-and-mortar location in downtown Shippensburg.

The 9000 square foot brick-and-mortar gallery is home to a large collection of works of art and estate jewelry. We specialize in sculpture circa 1860 through 1930 with a particular emphasis on the Animaliers and as such the gallery always has a very large collection of exceptional European and American sculpture available on display.

CHRISTOPHE FRATIN
French, 1801-1864

Seated Bear

Patinated sand-cast bronze | Signed in base "FRATIN"

Item # 202ZPP12A

An unusual and very small cabinet bronze by Fratin of a seated bear with its paws raised in a playful manner, the bear's features avoid the humorous anthropomorphism of his popular bear caricatures while still lending a highly expressive face. The beast is anything but fierce with a posture like one performing a trick; the mouth sits slightly agape and tongue presses forward as if in eager anticipation of a treat. The square base is signed "FRATIN".

Measurements: 3 3/8" H x 2 15/16" D x 2 7/16" W

Condition Report:
Very fine original condition, faint inked "D" to side of base, spot of verdigris oxidization to the right of signature and between his fingers (as well as in two areas in the underside), light wear to patina of nose, edge of paw and raised hump of the back.
