SET OF SIX REGENCY CARVED MAHOGANY DINING CHAIRS
England, early 19th century
Item # 907RPY31P
A classical set of six Regency period dining chairs comprised of five side chairs and one arm chair from the first quarter of the 19th century, they are notable for the gorgeous glowing burnished patina that has been rubbed into the shellac over centuries of careful wear. The result is a mellowed cognac hue to the wood throughout with a silky softness to the touch.
A somewhat typical form for the era, particular attention has been shown to the chair backs with reeding in the stiles and the lower back rail and an intricate pierced splat with double X formations in the center. The chair is situated over tapered legs terminating in spaded feet.
The joinery of the underside of the seat is also typical of the period with 45 degree long blocks dovetailed into the rails at each corner to supplement the glued tenons of the frame. These have loosened over time in four of the chairs, which should be tightened when the upholstery is removed prior to the chairs being recovered.
Priced with the joint restorations, old repairs and need for new fabric in mind, this will be a stunning set when eventually covered in a new fabric.
Measurements: [arm chair] 33 5/8" H x 21" W x 20 3/8" D, 18 1/2" H to seat; [side chairs] 34 1/4" H x 20" W x 20" D, 18 1/2" H to seat
In "as-is condition" with poor upholstery that must be changed. Four chairs have loose joints that should be tightened when the upholstery has been removed. Arm chair has some old repairs to the arms. Repairs to other rear legs including a spliced repair to the rear leg of the arm chair. Gorgeous worn surface patina with age appropriate wear throughout.
