F. PESCHLOW
Austrian, 19th/20th century
"Spartacus"
Black patinated bronze | signed in base "F. PESCHLOW"
Item # 212HUY09P
A somber depiction of the gladiator Spartacus standing over the fallen SPQR standard of the Roman republic (Senatus Populusque Romanus) and holding the helmet of a fallen centurian in his hand. Dressed only in a loincloth and carrying a short blade sword in hand, his jaw is set and firm as he and his followers stand against the Roman empire for over two years before his eventual death in battle. The present example was probably cast during the first quarter of the 20th century by an unknown Austrian sculptor. It is beautifully executed with a nearly pitch-black patinated surface showing traces of the underlying bronze rubbing through in relief and hues of verdigris in his slim garment and the decorations of the SPQR standard.
Measurements: 20 1/2"H [total]; base dimensions 5 7/8" D x 7 3/4" W
Condition Report:
Only the most minor patina relief and wear, overall a very fine presentation.
